HOW TO BOOK

** My commission diary for 2024 is currently OPEN! **
Details about the commission process, payment options, as well as taking and choosing your photos can be found further down this page.  If you think you would like to commission a drawing, just get in touch via the email form at the foot of the page.  Remember to tell me the subject, what size you'd like, and when you need it by, and I will book you in.  It's as simple as that!

PAYMENT

  My payment terms are as follows;
  1. I ask for 25% non-refundable booking fee by Bank transfer at the time of booking; this holds your space in my diary.
  2. Balance is due upon completion of your portrait, and prior to dispatch or collection.
  3. Additional interim payments are welcomed at any time, if you wish to help spread the cost.
  4. Booking fees are non-refundable, except in the unfortunate case where I may need to cancel your portrait, whereby I will refund you any monies paid.

WAIT LIST

  When my commission diary is full, I close my diary, and operate a waitlist, which works as follows;
  1. Once I receive your email request, I will add you to my wait list.
  2. When I am about to re-open my commission diary, I will email to ask whether you still wish to book a space.  You have no obligation to do so.
  3. If you decide to go ahead, I will ask you for your booking fee, as above.
  4. Please note; I do increase my prices periodically.  If you go on my wait list, you will be charged the price in force at the date you go on the list, and not the potentially higher cost that may apply at the booking date of your portrait.

YOUR PORTRAIT

All my portraits are completed using the highest quality 'lightfast' pencils, and are drawn on 'professional' grade 'archival' surfaces.  This is to ensure both the quality and longevity of your portrait.
  1. Please be aware that drawing portraits takes time, and this varies with each individual picture, and my workload, so if you need your portrait by a certain date, don't forget to mention it when booking, so I can fit it in accordingly.  For example, please don't contact me in early December with a Christmas deadline!
  2. When I have completed your drawing, I will send you a 'proof' electronically, for your approval, and we can discuss any changes you would like me to make.
  3. I will supply your portrait backed and mounted, ready to be framed professionally, or by yourself.
  4. Full care and hanging advice will be included with each portrait.

CHOOSING A PHOTO

It makes sense that the best portraits usually come from clear photos, so my advice is this;
  1. Choose a picture that captures the true character and essence of your subject.  It should show their features, and any distinctive markings clearly.
  2. Take your photo from a flattering angle.  Try to get the subject looking toward the camera, but not directly down the lens.  You may have to get down on the floor with a cat or dog, for example.  Pictures taken from above or below the subject will look distorted.  Get a friend with treats assist you, and remember horses often respond better to noises than treats, so use this to your advantage.
  3. Take your picture in good light; outdoor is usually best, on a light but overcast day, and avoid having the sun directly behind the subject.  A bright indoor setting can sometimes be suitable; try by a window, for example, but avoid reflections, and don't use the flash, as this causes 'red-eye' and distorts the colours.
  4. Always take more than one picture; the more visual information you can provide, the better.  Modern smart phones can take excellent photos.  If you are local,  am happy to take pictures for you, and I charge £50 for this, but I will email you high resolution copies of the photos, for you to keep.
  5. If you choose to use a professional photo, please always obtain the photographer's written permission; you may have paid for the photo, but the photographer still owns the legal copyright, and I will need a copy of their permission.

TERMS

In the event that you are unhappy with your final portrait, and we cannot reach a satisfactory outcome after a reasonable amount of revisions, any monies paid will be returned to you.  At this point, I reserve the right to sell the portrait on the open market, to help recover my costs.  The hourly rate for drawing portraits is far below the recognised minimum wage, so any unwanted portraits will be treated in this way.

COPYRIGHT

All artwork created by me and displayed on my website, social media pages, and elsewhere, is legally protected by UK and international copyright laws.  The use of my images is not permitted under any circumstances, without my prior written permission.  I retain the Copyright to all my artwork, however produced, and regardless of whether the original image has been commissioned, sold or gifted.  I retain the right to use my commissioned artwork in my advertising portfolio, whether this be electronically or in any physically reproduced form.
